Leading the strategy for creating an immersive theatre in a former department store.

Dirty Dancing’s residency required transforming a 30,000 sq ft former Debenhams into a 620 capacity theatre in‑the‑round. With major challenges around columns and ceiling height, JBC Projects assembled the design team and drove the scheme to tender.

JBC Projects was hired to develop the venue operation and development strategy.

JBC Projects worked with the client to translate their operational and commercial requirements into a buildable scheme, while acting as the key interface with Westfield to ensure full compliance with landlord guidelines and restrictions.

We led early project and design team meetings, assembling a professional team capable of delivering the brief. Alongside Costudio Consulting, we ran the contractor interview process to identify a main contractor who could work under a PCSA for the client’s delivery team.

Creating an immersive theatre within a non-traditional space.

Non-traditional spaces can become workable and successful entertainment venues, but careful consideration needs to be taken from the outset to establish how the content is going to be directed and produced to work with, not against the constraints of the space.
